EVOC 519 COURSE DESCRIPTION

EVOC 519 is primarily a computer assisted publishing (CAP) course in which students, referred to as scholars, use computers to prepare basic hard copy and electronic instructional materials.  Projects required for EVOC 501 and other EVOC courses can be prepared in the EVOC 519 lab.  Scholars develop and improve specific competencies.  Scholars with little or no background follow a schedule of in-class, self-paced, interactive assignments to develop practical, basic skills.  Scholars with previous computer experience may work under individual contracts using their own software and hardware to refine existing skills and develop practical, advanced skills.  All course requirements are spelled out at the first scheduled class meeting so each scholar can identify exactly what is expected, when it is expected, and the applicable standards of performance.

CAP deals with electronic publishing techniques.  Although this is a course offered in the Vocational Education program, it is a service course for all majors.  It is foundational and is designed to teach the fundamentals of desktop electronic publishing and digital imaging.  You will be exposed to computer equipment, computer techniques, computer peripheral equipment and application hardware and software.  You will learn to create and reproduce text, graphics, photographs and use Internet tools.  You will learn to transmit images from one point to another over telephone lines almost instantaneously, a tremendous advantage to educators and those wanting to create a World Wide Web (WWW) home page.

Simply put, CAP consists of reproducing digital images with a computer.  The computer-recorded images provide a powerful tool for visual communication.  Computers should be used as tools to communicate clear, concise ideas, especially in education related activities.  CAP is a new method for producing professional quality documents quickly and easily.  It offers advantages in speed, delivery and flexibility.  This course will enhance all vocational teachers' instructional and administrative responsibilities.
